Dear Isaac Wakil, 

My name is Eli Janover and I am an alumnus of the AUJS Susan Wakil Fellowship from 2021. 

I am living in Melbourne and in addition to the Fellowship, I am studying a bachelor of Health Sciences, as well as being heavily involved in my community as Chairperson of the Australasian Zionist Youth Council Victoria, which is the roof body of Victoria’s Zionist Youth Movements. 

The Fellowship paired really well with these experiences and enabled me to develop my leadership skills and put them directly into practice. This past year has been truly eye opening and I have gained so much thanks to the Fellowship. 

My Fellowship group’s project was focused on raising awareness of, and engagement with, homelessness issues and organisations. It was very successful and I am still receiving great feedback from those who attended our sessions and from homelessness organisations. 

In 2022 I am embarking on an honours year to complete a research project and I aim to continue my involvement in my community, but at the moment I am unsure which avenue to pursue on that front. 

One thing the Fellowship showed me was that there are so many options available, and now I have the skills and networks required to launch into the field of my choice.

My name is Leor Simovich and I was very fortunate to participate in the Susan Wakil Fellowship this year. 

I would like to express my gratitude to you for making this experience possible. 

Throughout the year, I have learned many skills and grown both personally and professionally. My group and I launched our project called Homelessness Engagement and Information Movement (HEIM), which aims to raise awareness and increase community engagement with the issues related to homelessness in Victoria. 

Our first three events were very successful, with more than 100 people attending! 

The Fellowship has equipped me with the tools to pursue a path in which I am able to combine my passion, knowledge, skills to create real, positive change in our world.

Dear Isaac, 

I hope this letter finds you well and the year 2022 brings with it an abundance of health and happiness for you and your family. I wanted to thank you so much for the opportunity to partake in the Susan Wakil Fellowship through AUJS. 

The concept which underpins the program is inspiring to engage young Jewish adults in societal issues which matter to them and the community at large. I was able to broaden my perspective of the Jewish community and the several programs it offers. Additionally, it highlighted my desire to give back more to our community, after 4 years of volunteering with JewishCare and have decided to volunteer with Friendship Circle this year inspired by meeting people in the Fellowship. 

From my time with the Fellowship, I was able to learn about both yours and Susan’s support of health education and healthcare. This was able to resonate with me as a Genetic Counselling student where discussing patients’ future health is at the forefront of the profession. One of the topics I was interested in discussing further in the Fellowship was health literacy particular relating to inherited diseases. 

From this experience I have been able to focus on elements of both personal and professional development. Particularly it allowed me to understand the environment and future workplace which I would like to find myself in as well as navigating challenges when working with a range of people with different expectations and interests. Additionally, I have felt supported during my Fellowship year particular by Timnah who a mentor has been not just during the Fellowship but also during my honour’s thesis amidst COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions. I am very fortunate to have had her constant support this year. 

In summary I wanted to thank you again for this fantastic opportunity and how fortunate I feel to be able to meet mentors, friends, and professional colleagues from this program. Looking forward to remaining connected to the Fellowship as alumni.
